Napa Valley's 45,000 planted vineyard acres form a corridor 48 kilometres long and eight kilometres wide, bounded by two mountain ranges that channel Pacific fog inland each morning. The valley floor's alluvial soils favour Cabernet Sauvignon; hillside benchlands grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in cooler microclimates. Electric bike routes follow the Silverado Trail, a 47-kilometre byway parallel to Highway 29, passing estates where French, Italian and American winemaking traditions converge. The trail's flat southern section connects Yountville to Oakville and Rutherford, three appellations responsible for 60 percent of Napa's premium Cabernet production. Commercial wine tourism began here in 1976, when the Judgment of Paris blind tasting placed Napa vintages above Bordeaux first growths. Visitor numbers grew from 200,000 annually in 1975 to 3.8 million by 2019. E-bike operators emerged in the mid-2010s to serve tourists deterred by the valley's July temperatures, which average 31°C but frequently exceed 38°C. Pedal-assist cycling keeps exertion moderate; riders cover 20 to 30 kilometres in four hours, stopping at two or three wineries for seated tastings. Most half-day loops depart Yountville, a town of 3,400 that anchors the valley's midsection and hosts 23 tasting rooms within a one-square-kilometre grid. The Napa Valley Wine Train, which began carrying passengers in 1989, now offers bike-and-rail packages: riders cycle north from Yountville to St. Helena, then return by vintage Pullman car. The combination eliminates the logistical problem of one-way routes.
